Biodiesel Fuel
Biodiesel fuel for diesel engines has become a realistic alternative to standard diesel fuel engines. Electric Hybrid Cars, Hydrogen Fuel, Solar Powered Cars, Water4Gas, etc hold promise but currently are too expensive or have not been developed enough.
Now anyone can go to a gas station and find the diesel pump. What they generally find is that diesel fuel is more expensive than regular gasoline. So what are these alternative energy fuels people are talking about? Diesel is more expensive than regular gasoline. The fact remains however that there are major advantages to using
Biodiesel fuel burns cleaner because is made of non-toxic chemicals that does not give out poisonous fumes, unlike regular diesel fuel;
Biodiesel fuel has better lubrication properties and so gets your vehicle moving smoother. No more cranky noises and fear of your vehicle breakdowns;
Biodiesel fuel lasts longer and allows you to drive further on a tank of it;
Biodiesel is environmentally friendly because it contains non-chemical ingredients and is generally harmless to the environment.It is generally made from animal fats or vegetable fats. (Vegetable oil, cooking oil).
It all sounds so good so where can I get it? The fact is that it is generally hard to find a seller of biodiesel. That leaves you to make it yourself. What! Make it yourself! Yes, you read that right. I assume you own a diesel vehicle. If so, then get your blender out and let's learn how to make biodiesel.
Get some recycled oil from a restaurant (Chinese restaurants often throw it out every couple of weeks and will generally be happy to give it to you). If not, then go to walmart and buy any vegetable oil.
Fill up a blender container with about 1 liter of the oil, add a half liter of sodium methoxide (methanol and lye mixed together). Generally, you will have to buy the methanol and lye from a hardware store separately. Mix the two together to get sodium methoxide and then put the sodium methoxide into the oil you've collected.
Pour it into the blender, close the top of the blender and turn it on low to medium for 15-20 minutes. Let it sit for 8 hours . What you will see after eight hours will be a clear biodiesel fuel at the top of the glass container and a dark brown sediment liquid (glycerin) at the bottom. Remove the glycerin from the bottom with a decanter or a funnel. If you don't do this, the biodiesel will turn into a gel like mixture so get the glycerin at the bottom out of the container.
Of course you'll want to use the top layer and pour it into a larger container until you have the desired amount. This requires that you separate the two parts of the mixture with a decanter or funnel. Then you can pour it into your diesel gas tank and drive away.
This is the homemade version of biodiesel fuel. To scale up production, you will need larger mixers and containers of course.
