Today, one of the greatest challenges that the human race faces is finding ways to produce and utilize energy sources. For well over one hundred years, the push to find a means of generating low-cost power to operate all of man's inventions has grown in importance. For many years, steam, coal and oil-fired generators produced power inexpensively. The success of finding ways to use the most plentiful and 'proven' energy resources placed the search for alternate energy sources on hold.
New ideas and power sources were tested and researched during those years but were rarely developed into commercial practical uses. It always seemed that alternate energy devices worked best in powering small scale projects and to power individual homes and cars. The energy devices that were created however, often did not work as well or as efficiently when applied to larger scale projects.
The result has been that serious financial resources have not gone to fund alternative energy projects. It has been much easier to continue our dependence on fossil fuel energy and costly hydroelectric energy to power our towns and cities. The will and need to change has not been strong enough to spur people to force industries and politicos to change the status quo. So, we remain stuck in over dependence on fossil fuels.
However, we are now unable to procrastinate the need to diversify our fuel sources any longer. Overuse of cheap fossil fuels made from crude oil have been having bad effects on the earth.
A Brief History of Alternate Energy Sources
During the 1970's, the basic need for alternate energy sources was brought back to life with the Arab Oil Embargo. This situation created very long lines at gas stations and produced some critical shortages throughout the United States. Overall, the search to find alternate power generation isn't limited to identifying just one or two ways of powering our vehicles. It is about supplying cheap power for both industries and homes alike and is an incremental continuous endeavor.
There have been several advances made within the search for alternative energy sources. However, the price of the power that is produced is still too high compared to fossil fuel power. As oil prices continue to rise, alternative power sources will become more viable. Water, wind and sun are touted as being natural resources with tremendous potential to change the face of energy use throughout the world. Making power cost effectively is the key. Replacing fossil fuels will not be easy but it is certainly within the realm of possibility as demand for power increases even more.
For several people, the idea of switching to an alternate energy source is just a matter of locating the precise alternate power type that is going to work the best within their own geographical location. Individuals that live within this area, which have very limited exposure to the sun, might not be all that excited when it comes to using solar panels in order to supply power. In the event that the sun goes down for a couple of days, the town would go completely dark.
Within some of these areas, the wind isn't considered to be a problem because it seems to blow each and every day. The use of wind power in order to turn the turbines to generate the electricity is able to work there, however it may not work within other areas that are known to experience the less windy conditions. Hydropower, another one of the alternate energy sources is known to use the river's power to turn the generators.
While cost-effective power supplies may be the holy grail of alternative energy, it is the funding that is devoted to its development that is most important. Major funding for proto-type projects is forthcoming. It in fact has never been easier than now to attract attention and funding for alternative energy projects. Wind power, solar panel power, geothermal power, cleaner-burning natural gas, hydrogen fuel power and new types of batteries are destined to become mainstream power sources in the future.
